Carrot seed tape
« on: April 18, 2012, 23:09 »
Lidl are selling a few varieties of carrot in seed tape.

I put some in today.

Anyone tried these with good results?

I haven't tried them but have heard, more than once, that the results don't tend to be too good with patchy germination. Beechgrove conducted a test a couple of years agoand they weren't impressed if I recall. I posted on that in here, but can't put my hand to the post right now..

I used it a few years ago and found them to be patchy. I ended up with big gaps when one or two failed to germinate. I also live near a park and the squirrels often bury/dig up nuts - when they got hold of the tape lots came up and I had to try to re bury it!

I've tried making my own this year. Cut some strips of newspaper and stuck seeds to them with flour and water glue. They've just started to germinate.

I did it so that I didnt need to thin out as much but I suppose that the down side may be that there are some gaps.

Regards, WG  ;)

I've never thinned carrots in all my years.

My 5 thumbs on each hand don't let me sow particularly thinly, but they'll gently push each other to one side.

Thinning only attracts the attention of carrot fly.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Good to know. I have only once grown a decent row of carrots.

I will leave my carrots alone then, it does say on the packet to thin but this will save me the trouble.

Someone gave me carrot seed tape once so I tried it but won't be buying any. I had to go along later and fill in the gaps as it was so patchy. A gimmick in my opinion.
