How to make my carrots grow straight?

I've got the answer!!  We were given this bit of advice from a neighbour, who had tried without any success to grow carrots in clay until he did this.  Use a broom handle, or the like, to dib a hole quite deep (about the length of a carrot   ).  Fill the hole with compost, then sow the carrot seed in the compost, thin when they've sprouted and hey presto lots of straight, lovely carrots.
We tried it this year and it really works, I am now going to try to show a pic as proof.

And for good measure they go soft and bendy three days later.  Think mine was fresh multipurpose compost, gonna try spent compost next time.
Thats a Carrot Healthmaster (red colour) and a carrot with no name from Cheers er I mean Lidl's (Unless Karnavit is s'posed to be its name).

How did you do with the carrots grown in a bath?   I've just obtained an old bath and was thinking of trying carrots and parsnips in same and would appreciate the benefit of your experiences of last year.

Grown in heavy clay after adding several tons of sand.
