Hi, I believe hens 'gape' to help their food go down from their crop, its a stretching neck motion with an open mouth, like a yawn.  But this can also be a sign of gape worm, when were they last wormed?  It may be an idea to worm your girls.  Hope this helps :)

We have only had our girls for a couple of months and I didn't realise you had to worm them.  How do I go about doing this????  I'm glad my daughter asked that question now!!!!!

Hi
The best thing to worm your girls with is Flubenvet, you can get it from your vet or buy it on line. Do a search on this forum for it and you will find all the info you need.  :)
1 Hubby, 2 children, 2 Welsummers, 1 Leghorn Banty, 1 Wyandotte Banty, 1 Barnevelder, 2 Isa Brown, 1 Rhode Island, 1 Goldline,1 Maran, 2 Mottled Leghorns, 1 Leghorn cockerel & 2 Jack Russells

Have you also checked and treated them for lice? Prevention is the best method!

As PaulineM recommended Fubenvet is the best method to treat them for worms.

Sounds like the hen was just moving food from the crop.
Still worth getting some flubenvet for worming though.
Gapeworm can seriously affect the breathing , have a look here, R8iL3U2lj50
not nice.
