Too late for sowing parsnips?
« on: May 15, 2018, 11:48 »
Parsnips sown in early April are not showing yet (well looks like just one seedling made an appearance!  :()

Is it too late to sow another batch?

Hope not  ;) I'm just putting mine in now - about the normal time (for me). I always find earlier sowings are very much hit and (more) miss. I think a few others around here don't sow till May either.

I've tended to sow them later and later as the years have gone by yet still get good sized parsnips.

Will sow this year's in a few days time (after I've dug up all the volunteer spuds growing in their intended position! )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

With the funny season temperatures we've had, I'd give it a go as there's nothing lost in trying!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

You should be ok, just. I would sow them direct this time of year, and given the sunny dry weather forecast for the next week or two, make sure you keep them wet, best probably under some enviromesh to keep some of the moisture in.
And one more thing, if your previous didn't show, might be worth spending a pound on a new packet of seeds. Parsnip seeds have a reputation. I had to resow this year, and did it with a new packet.

Have you thought of pre-chittng first before sowing? Been using this method for years and very reliable. Like others mine have just gone in and now up.

Hi Aidy,

No not thought of that. I do pre-chit beans and sweetcorn, but never considered parsnips. Will bear in mind for future.

Thanks,

I sowed mine the first week in June last year and got the best parsnips ever.  I put one batch in about three weeks ago and they popped through yesterday.  Will be sowing another larger batch the last week in May or first week in June.

I sowed a load mid April but have some more space prepared and was planning on dosing more this coming weekend. Should be ok, they should germinate more vigorously in a warmer soil.
