poisonous? plants
« on: May 14, 2006, 15:26 »
Hi everyone - I am in my second year of growing vegetables in raised beds at the bottom of the garden. My wife has thrown me with this one, however. I have had a large Gunnera in the bottom corner, about six feet away from the closest veg (rhubarb). She says she has heard from someone that Gunnera is carcinogenic and that it is too close to the veg patch. Can anyone throw any light on this??

we've had ours about 5 years now and it reaches +- six feet with the leaves almost five feet long and three wide. Can't take a pic, unfortunately, yet.

I really wouldn't worry - if it was that deadly there would be warnings all over the place about it.

See the album - Garden Plants for a picture of a Gunera. There are some lovely ones in the hidden garden on Colonsay. They love moisture.
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.
