Tall shade loving plants
« on: March 13, 2017, 12:24 »
I'm looking for tall (min 3ft) shade loving plants/grasses etc that can be grown in pots.  Need to be evergreen (but not conifers!) does such a plant exist??  :D thanks in advance

I have a few suggestions :

Phyllostachys aurea or nigra - the golden and black stemmed bamboos - you won't get great stem colour in the shade, but they grow there OK

Nandina domestica - a pretty shrub that has leaves that show vivid colours in spring and autumn

Fatsia japonica - huge leaves that block out quite a lot

Euonymus - these can grow quite tall or be trained onto trellis

Ceanothus - again, some take to trellis growing very well

Pittosporum tenuifolium - these can take shaping so a tall thin shrub is easily achievable

Photinia Red Robin - also very good at being shaped whichever way you fancy

May I also add Viburnum tinus. It's evergreen with white flowers in late winter and spring with deep purple berries in autumn. I have one in full sun but it does as well in a moist and shady position and can be trimmed back as hard as you want. Also look at Griselina and Arbutus unedo (the strawberry tree).
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
