You could do that, but you'd need to keep your seed potatoes in good condition until you're ready to plant them.  What's more normal is to choose a mixture of varieties that mature at different times - a first early, a second early and a maincrop salad type or two.  That should give you plenty from the new potatoes in early summer to pink fir apple (or another very late type if you prefer) well into October.

hello
would suggest putting them in six inches apart to reduce growing area in ground, also plant 2nd early same way as with maincrop.giving you a longer cropping period of smaller totts.
                                 good luck tibbs

I'd try planting more and harvesting earlier.

When I first read the subject title, I imagined drunken potatoes  :D

Actually, there are some specific potato varieties, mostly from eastern Europe that are long thin types and waxy, perfect for potato salads. Banana types is a popular name for them, but not a specific name. They can grow full size but still be perfect for salads with only slicing up.

If you want a late salad potato try pink fir apple.  It's a maincrop and really tasty.  I love them and the slugs don't seem to. ;)

Try growing Charlotte or Anya which are salad potatoes. Both are second earlies but produce small waxy potatoes. Pink Fir Apple are late main crop salads. Very nobbly so cook in the skins. PFA keep very well. I have some still and they are showing no sign of speouting.

My Charlotte grew to baking size last year! I do agree that they are one of the best salad spuds though.

PFA are excellent keepers, as stated and refuse to chit!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's just answered one puzzle.

Last year was my 1st season with half a plot & I just planted Cara which were brill.  Now with a whole plot I'm going a bit madder with spuds.

I always grow charlotte as my salad potatoes, superb for taste and right size but I do put them all in at same time except a couple i get in early in the greenhouse. No problems with any getting massive.

I never said it was a problem, in fact they were the tastiest baked spuds I've ever had!
