A bit might depend on what variety they are. I see from the instructions on my first earlies that in general the supplier recommends 10-12 weeks. But I remember from last year that I lifted my first ones at around 7 weeks and they were definitely of a usable size.

What variety are they?

I read some place, you can stick your hand in the mound, and take enough for say 2 people, and then the plant isn't disturbed, and they will grow more spuds back?? dont know how true that is though, but I will give it a try

I cant remember without looking, but I got early mid and late

Bear in mind that the earlier you plant them, the colder the ground will be and the slower they will grow. Spuds planted 4 weeks earlier will not necessarily crop four weeks earlier.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
