Monkey nuts....peanuts!!!!!!
« on: April 06, 2008, 11:26 »
I read on here about growing peanuts from the supermarket (not the salted ones!!!)

Thanks to this really helpfull site i now have learnt that Peanuts are Monkey nuts that grow in the ground not from the tops.
My Father in Law who knows most things didnt know this so im pretty proud of my knolledge!!!!!!!!!!

We are going to plant some in pots in the greenhouse and see what happens.

Has anyone had any success with this and is there any tips?
We really have the growing bug and veiw everything as a possible growing experiment. :D

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!! blimey i thought they were nuts,,,,do you think it will work growing them?
I am just going to trot up the greenhouse and decide what to do with the Onions.
We have about 10 seed trays of Robinsons mamouth seedlings (got all enthusiastic when we saw a gardening programe)

The thing is so many are weighing down the little staging shelf and we didnt realise we wouldnt be eating onions from them this year. They havent grown a centimetre i the last 8 weeks despite being in doors!!
Are they worth hanging on to or use the space for something else?

I think peanuts are more of a novelty house plant, otherwise they would have caught on a few years back.

Onions, I'm pretty new at this but I got overwintering onions, sets and shallots for early start. Seeds are going straight in the ground after I've got all the other March/April seeds out.  I reserve indoor space for frost tender things.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

peanuts and monkey nuts are two different things.

2nd photo is from mumsy

peanuts are chrunchy

the latter appear to be rather on the chewy side
