carrot fly resistant varieties - do they work?
« on: September 15, 2009, 17:40 »
Hi having been browsing through what to buy for next year I see that some varieties of carrot claim to have better resistance to carrot fly, can anyone confirm firstly is this is true? and secondly, if it is do they taste any good?  No point growing perfect carrots if they taste awful :o)

I think the one I saw was flyaway??

I grew resistafly this season and had no carrot fly problems.  But I also grew autumn king in the same bed with no protection and no problems either, so I can only conclude that there was very few carrot fly about.  What I am certain about is the autumn king tasted a helluva lot better than the resistafly!!

i grew my carrots in a box i made out of scaffold boards and ply,sat on a couple of bandstands,box filled with soil and compost mixture.they were great tasted so nice.but apparently the carrot fly can oly fly about 20" off the ground or so i was told but they never got mine,or maybe they never had a sat-nav :wacko:
i dont suffer with insanity..........i enjoy every minute of it.

Does carrot fly resistant mean that they are less attractive to the fly than other carrots, or that the carrot fly maggots do not thrive on them.

If it is the former then they should logically work best alongside other carrots which would draw the flies in to lay their eggs?

Maybe plant 1 row in 4 with ordinary carrots as a decoy and accept that they will be riddled with holes and sacrificed to protect the resistant ones.

Has anyone tried this, either by design or accidentally?

Not sure but this is what they say on the advertising;

"British bred with partial Carrot Fly resistance, due to lower levels of chlorogenic acid within the developing roots."

No idea whether its flies or maggots which aren't supposed to like lower acid though?
