Golden Delicious apples
« on: September 29, 2018, 16:50 »
I don't know whether it's favourable weather conditions or the couple of barrow-loads of muck I put at the base last winter, but my Golden Delicious are the best the tree has ever produced since I planted it 33 years ago. Not a trace of the bitter-pit that usually afflicted them. Just good, blemish-free fair sized fruit and at an estimate, at least 50 kg of them. In fact all my other apple trees have done better than ever.

The only fruit disappointments are my Conference and Comice pears which are small, hard and tasteless. I put this partly down to planting them in former pasture which is quite shallow and clayey, unless anyone has any better explanation?

It's been a good apple year generally, GD particularly love the long hot weather. Interesting your comments on bitter pit I've noticed the opposite, my bramley has suffered terribly this year. 50Kgs of apples is some serious apple pie material  :tongue2:

I'd love to say it was the same here, but most of my apples have gone the way of the pictures, I imagine I'll get less than 20Kgs from the lot. I didn't get 1 pear from beth, onward, concorde or winter nelis.    there's always next year.

We only have one apple tree which is an old Bramley and it's done really well this year.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I'm seeing if my pear trees will respond to the two barrow-loads of manure per tree treatment that worked so well with the Golden Delicious (and the other apple trees too). I''ll find out next year

A funny old year. I have five apple trees and two have given excellent crops but the others are poor to non-existent. Ah well !
