It's all a bit of fun so if the feeling is we do holiday snaps, I'm game.

Okay then, I'll just hop on a plane and whizz over to Boston and take a photo as according to all the mags, this is the place for 'the colours of the fall' (I know I haven't spelt colours as in the American way but I was taught proper).

Hmm, Autumn could be good for October, Halloween pics for November and then for December we could have Christmas day on the plot :)

Then again, I could cause a few divorces with that.

Still open to ideas everyone - I've got prizes organised

This is one of my first years of growing in a "reasonable" area ... we really have a small garden .... so I'm kinda screwed when it comes to the "biggest marrow" "best harvest" "largest chicken" kinda subjects

Maybe a "before and after" would be good for december, it's cheaper than buying tinsel, and it'd be interested to see what the amateurs ( like me ) and the professionals have made of their plot

Although, I warn yah now ... if you run it next year then I'm gonna whup yer arses with my improvements :| .... after I get shedloads of help on here ;)

How about you take a photo of what 'Autumn' is for you (with a caption)? Perhaps it's what you see and then think 'gosh it must be autumn'. It could be a particular tree going brown, certain hand reared ducks * off to warmer climes or in my case, the Manchester ship canal coated in leaves.

I went to Switzerland when I was about 5 or 6 back in the early 70s. Can remember going up in the Eiger foothills and going to Berne with the old bearpit.

Very well kept place but not terribly exciting back then. No war damage i suppose.  :)

All very interesting and educational, our four year old kept asking questions about the wasp and spider.

Don't you think it could restrict entrants to a narrow class of people?  i.e. those who a) are able to compost, and b) are able to construct their own?

Most of the other competitions are sufficiently widely drafted to allow many members to consider an entry?

Long term contest for next year possibly to be kicked off: 1ft square flower garden.

Coming up i'm thinking of 'after the harvest'. Structures/pictures made from the leftovers of plants after they have been harvested. A bit like the egg shell stuff you would make for Easter.

Another one would be 3 photos over the course of a day of your veg/flower plot. At Dawn, Midnight, Dusk & Midnight. 3 of the four should be enough but all four may be nice.

Finally! (got in the flow now) Allotment oddities. All the unusual stuff that doesn't fit into any category. Special statues and the little extras that bring you a little pride to your garden or plot.

Oh, poo ......(am I allowed to say that here?  ).

I've no chance..... can't even find the close-up lens at the moment.

But if we do have "Close Up" as a theme it doesn't necessarily mean it has to be a magnified shot does it?

Where's John?
What do you think of the idea of "close-up" as a theme? Sounds to me as if one or two people are raring to go already!!  ;)

Learner im sure you could get some small leaves and do the same kinda thing, they would have to be small leaves tho. Poolfield this was taken just for the reflection in the droplets i was just trying some angles and natural lighting stuff.

I used a small sheet of perspex about 6x4 with 2 piles of pencils with rubber bands around them under the sheet either side and some crossed paper to give the pattern added some water droplets and creates the effect. All taken on the window sill on a sunny afternoon.

I do do some strange things at work.

I like that idea - a greeting or special occasion card - and it's not been done before as far as I know.

I quite often use a snap that's turned out well to make cards for the family - takes longer than nipping to the local card shop but you get what you want.  :)

We created and sold a photo calender - 12 classes - one class per month themed. April = "showers" (strangely enough - my class but there again you haven't met them!!)

They brought wellies, coats / waterproofs and brollies... colourful.

Doing something similar with plants / gardens / lotties is an interesting notion!  ;)

In Leicestershire I, as a Master Composter,  am organising two competitions to promote Compost Awareness Week in May 2011. These are Best Compost and Best Painted compost bin. You are welcome to join us  as a supporter of the Leicestershire Best Compost competition (this actually requires a sample to be submitted which might be difficult on the net) but why not have a nation wide best painted bin competition. which is based on photos. We normally get prizes donated by sullpiers and last year the Community composting network also made a grant to help.  It is fun  and encourages people to take an interest in composting.

How do you get to be a Master Composter?

It's a scheme run by "Garden Organic" to encourage people to make compost.

Something cheerful, like 'what are you looking forward to'.  I'm personally fed up with this horrible weather, the flu bug etc.   I'm personallly looking forward for the first time in about four years  to being able to go away for a whole two weeks on holiday without having to think about anyone else and have they had theirs.

Another idea perhaps:

How about a competition entitled "Recycle It"? or "Want it - Don't Waste It"

It could be any idea that makes use of something in a novel / different / useful way.

You never know there may be tips to be had for making use of otherwise waste materials - things that could be used on the plot, in the garden, around the chicken pens or generally.

Photos, descriptions / instructions to present the idea/s.

Just a thought..

A new book title for John?

It's only a bit of fun but I've put a little prize in to make it interesting.

Any ideas?

I know what you mean , Joy, for compy ideas, both the growers and chicken keepers, (unless they already do both), really have to think outside their box.

I'm very easy confused (as you've probably gathered by now). Do you mean that growers should come up with compy ideas for chicken keepers and vice versa. Or that compys should be suitable for both growers and chicken keepers. Nope... still confuddled  ???

Ahhhh, is it because this is posted in the overall compy section that the compy should be suitable for everyone?

Ah but Olive, that leaves out the people who don't keep chickens. I think the photo ones are a great idea, but need to think of something that everyone can do. Having looked through the compy stuff, it's like, 'spring', 'autumn' etc... I think 'happiness' might be a nice one - that could cover everything from veg to chickens, to family, pic of you with your feet up with a can of beer etc.

Big, small, garden or allotment or even just a few pots with veg in, but open to us all. It could be announce at the beginning of the  year with the competition taking place in perhaps July. Title: Re: Ideas For Competition
Post by: Growster... on November 27, 2012, 19:38
If the competition is for a photograph taken between 3rd Dec and 3rd January, that doesn't leave much time for me to set up the Boer War Growster Journalist's Semi-Automatic Leather-Bellows See-All Camera, with whalebone adjustments, and ebony gussetts, now does it!

Blimey, sometimes it takes about three days just to get the equipment organised, and I have to wait for a sunny, still day with no cloud, and also, the good people at Boots will be on holiday, so the photo-plates won't be developed much before February!

Then I'll have to drive the old Morris 8 up to Nottingham to collect them, as the post is no good with such delicate objects, and petrol is nearly 4/6 a gallon, so all I'm asking is, can I send in my contributions in March, and also, if I send a stamped addressed envelope, can I have them back please?

I really don't know what the world's coming to these days, some competitions back in my day took nearly three years! You want it all done and dusted in a month!

:0)

:0)

Growster do stop faffing about with all that fiddly equipment. Get with it and modern like what I've done. Get yourself a Kodak Box Brownie!!! They are truly brilliant and you can turn them on their side and snap away but rememver to roll the film on and check the little window at the back or you'll be over exposed or is it super imposed?

Good luck everyone get snapping!!

It could also include chicks hatched under a broody "despite the weather".  Any other suggestions?    :)

Are there any photo comps running?
What about - it's too hot! Or Summer finally arrived?
Or New Pets? ( garden wildlife as normal folk would call them, my mum keeps telling me my son found a new pet today, he digs in the soil and touches the beetles and holds the worms etc)

What about a "Wildlife on the plot/in the garden" photo competition? Would be quite interesting to see what wildlife others have seen and photographed.

If there's going to be a new competition sometime this year how about a simple one word title:

Comfort

This could apply to growers and/or chicken keepers and be anything you do to make life comfortable for yourself, for helpers / family or for your chooks or even your crops.

Just a thought... relax and enjoy  ;)

I like that idea - I don't think a photo competition should necessarily be about the best xxxx, anybody should be able to win it however poor their xxxx skills are, by taking an original and meaningful photo.  So my suggestion for a subject would be:

Diversity

Or just pictures of things upcycled to another use? You could guess their uses and the most obscure one wins.

Or, now that we've reached November, "Winter Wonderland"?

That would give us a few months to get thinking and everyone is likely to experience it one way or another.

(Unless, of course, you're from down-under.)

Is it too late for an idea?

What if we asked all the big posters (maybe hero or above, or the mods) for a picture of their plot and then we have to match the plot to the list of posters?

Whoever mesages their guesses with the  most correct wins?

Interesting idea - (a bit like guess the adult from the baby picture) but it could be a time consuming job working out the winner. You volunteering?  :nowink:
Or
Perhaps there is a way of using an on-line tool to solve the problem?

I was thinking we hadn't had a one-off compy for a while.  What about Beauty and the Beast - a photo of one of your prize offerings against something mad, bad or just plain ugly.  It would let us all have a coo over our successes and a combined chuckle over our failures.  I have several contenders for the Beast element of any photo I submit

I like the idea of a photo that means a word to you like COMFORT, DIVERSITY, FRUGALITY, INGENUITY, HAPPINESS, PRIDE, FORTITUDE, ETC.
It gives everyone on the forum a chance to enter with their own interpretation, and the judges an interesting time judging.

There's an idea.

I can contribute: budgies and foreign finches, tropical fresh-water and marine fish, cats and kittens, conure parrots and pretty tame koi carp....as well as foxes and hedgehogs if they are allowed.

Sometimes everyday life itself is competitive enough perhaps?

A Christmas (are we allowed to say the "C" word this early in the autumn?) competition might be an idea.

It's (fortunately) ages away so there'd be tons of time to plan something wouldn't there?

Ho, ho, ho.......... Merry that word beginning with "C" = "competition" of course. ;)
