« on: February 08, 2011, 23:44 »
Has anyone used chesnut paling fencing for a chicken run? I am thinking of using it with chicken wire. Can foxs jump chesnut paling?

They can climb most rigid fences and jump 5 foot fences without difficulty.  They are less likely to attempt to jump flexible nets of greater than 4 foot height and particularly if electrified.  To make rigid fences fox proof they need to be 6 foot plus with the top turned out 18inches or so or an electric wire protecting them from being climbed and dug under.

Note to give a fox a zap they need to touch both an earthed wire (or the ground) and the electrified wire.  Otherwise they won't get a a zap like birds perched on high voltage lines don't get a shock.

Also better to use weld mesh rather than chicken wire :)

If a 6 foot wire net fence is protected with one or two electrified strands 12 inches or so from the base to prevent digging, chicken wire would be fine as a fox wouldn't be able to chew it without being zapped.   A further strand is placed about 18inches from the top that will prevent climbing.  the chicken wire it's self should be earthed with an earth stake every 100ft or so.

This is the next best solution and a lot cheaper and easier to implement than total enclosure in a cage and almost as secure.
