Chickens and sand
« on: January 05, 2017, 16:05 »
Since we had to confine our girls, I filled a cat litter tray with play sand, thought they might like to bath in it (they didn't) they do like to scratch in it though and eat it  ??? is this OK for them?

They have grit which gets ground to sand in the gizzard so should not be a problem.

Play sand is fine.

If you are going to do it regular just get sharp or silver sand from a builders merchants it will work out much cheaper.

Don't get building sand which is the red stuff because you will end up with red chickens.

If you put some Diatom or equivalent in with the sand this will help to prevent beasties as well.  :)

Not much chance of dry soil round here at the moment

Also how would you make sure the soil wasn't contaminated?
