Hiding under the coop
« on: September 09, 2008, 14:21 »
I've notice when Im not out in the back garden the girls hide under the coop. Its currently against 2 walls so the back corner where they go is dark and in this weather damp (read wet).

Much as Id love to spend my day in the garden making R2D2 noises back at them I have to work

I've put a litter tray of sand, a shower tray of compost, a perch, hung a cd up and put a cabbage in the run.  All of which they ignore and stand motionless in a puddle under the coop until I go and talk to them. Is it just because its all new ? Its not going to cause problems standing in the puddle is it?

Standing in muddy puddles certainly won't do them any good, but if you've not had them long, they are probably scared still.  Is there anyway you can build up the ground underneath the coop so that it doesn't get so wet?  Once they feel more comfortable, they will come out more.  Can you put some chicken wire or something to stop them going under there at the moment?

I know the weather is a bit wet, but they can go in the coop to keep dry???

The whole run is covered but the water seems to be running down the 2 walls and collecting at the back, (Its on the list of things to fix)  As its a slab concrete drainage isnt too good.

I dont mind them hiding under there but if its going to cause them problems I better see if I can block it off for the time being - I'll be glad when the rain stops so I can move some rubbish off the patio and let them play there.

Oh I know what you man Lardman!  Our runs are just mud baths at the moment, then when the hens go inside, the inside of their house looks as bad as the outside!!!!

Bloomin' rain!!!!!   :(

Have you had your chucks long?  When I first got my girls they spent most of there time sat under the coop.   I made the smoke shelter as they dont go back to the coop when it rains.

Unfortunately, where Stuart lives, the rain is so polluted that his chickens mutated into hairy, four legged mammals

Lovely looking dog RH  :)

Ours tend to sit under their little shelters too. And sunbathe on them when it's warm. The more you have for them to hide under or perch on, out of the mud, the better IMO.

And food is always the way to their hearts

No that is a chicken.  Honest.  It (Cassie) lays brown odd shaped eggs though and at the moment she is having a soft shell issue so have not been tempted to eat one.
