Onions from Seed
« on: February 25, 2014, 16:15 »
Hi,

I have sown onion seeds in plastic tray inserts (the ones with about 24 modules per tray).  They germinated after a week and are about an inch or so tall.

Should I leave off the propagator lid now?
How often should they be watered?
Can I leave them in the modules until ready for planting or do they need to go into something bigger?  The modules are fairly small and shallow...
Lastly, how much light and warmth do they need?  I can keep them in the house or put them in an outbuilding, though the latter does not get much light but will probably be cooler than the house.

Thanks.

This specific thread on onions from seed may help.

http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=111632.0

You need to take the propagator lid off as soon as the plants show and they need to go somewhere cooler AND light. As you've kept them covered and warm for a week, you may already have weakened the plants beyond rescue and it may be easiest to start again.

How many do you have in each module?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They germinated after a week and that was about two days ago, surely I cant have damaged them already??  I didn't use a heated propagator, just a normal one.  I'll take the lids off now, but they will have to stay in the house as I don't have a green house.  Where do others keep them?

And do they need replanting in something bigger?

Cheers.

Mine are on a window sill in a reasonably cool room, approx 15 degrees. I've planted mine in deep pots so won't be transplanting them till its time to go out but as you have said they are in a shallow container they will probably need transplanting when they get a bit bigger. Something like when the 3rd leaf appears as onions like to have room for their roots to grow.

how many seedling did you plant per module?

A variation - in some modules I put single seeds, and in others I put multiple seeds.  As stated, they germinated a few days ago - most are an inch or more high, and one of them has a leaf.  I've had the plastic see-though cover on until today - how will I know if I have damaged / weakened them?

They would be weak and pale.

If they look OK so far, the chances are they will do fine, as long as they go somewhere cool now

Hopefully they will be fine.  Anyone know how deep the trays / pots should be, when growing from seed?

Can someone quantify what "a cool place" means in terms of temperature.

My onions are about three inches high on a SW facing windowsill (and surrounded by tin foil) in a room temperature of around 12C, is that reasonable?

I grow mine in modules around 2 ins deep.

Al78,  "cool" in this case would mean anything above freezing to around 10-12 deg C I suppose. Day time temps might be above that outside even of course, which would be fine, but at night they certainly don't need to be warm  ;)

If yours are growing strongly where they are, then leave them until you can put them somewhere outside to harden off.

mine seem to be leaning over a lot now and looking weaker - maybe the room is too warm.

Mine look like this at the moment (Sown on the 9th Feb):

Roughly when can I start hardening them off in a small plastic greenhouse?
