Sieving soil for carrots
« on: May 15, 2010, 11:41 »
I've just been in the garden to prepare a bed for some carrots and parsnips and it's still full of stones. So I thought i'd sieve the soil to get rid of the stones. It's taking forever though.

I've dug and sieved a hole about 90cm wide by 50cm by just over a spades depth in about half an hour.....is a spades depth enough or should i be going deeper - or less deep which would be good as i've got 7m to dig before the cup final starts (assuming my back holds out!!).

I spent two days last year sieving soil into a bath to grow carrots. The slugs at them before they made it to an edible size  :(
The force is strong in this one!

they are only little stones  (not huge boulders) so personally I wouldn't bother.
Do you have to have perfect veg......in other words is the effort worth it to you?

I used a bulb planter last year to take out a double depth "core" of soil. I then filled the hole with sieved soil. Far less effort than sieving a whole block ;)

Me too - after all there is usually a class for "the rudest looking vegetable" in the local show later in the year!  :tongue2:

last year I dug a trench and filled that with seived soil mixed with sand it seemed to work- and I knew anything not growing out of the sandy stuff was a weed. This was important because I have previously managed to weed half my parsnips thinking they woud come up looking like carrot leaves :nowink:
