Weed Killer!?
« on: July 10, 2009, 18:14 »
We have cut trees down ready for a fence to be put up in a week to give us more space to grow fruit/veg etc! However there are loads of over grown weeds, grass and that.

We bought some weedol and have put that on today giving it a good thorough.
Anybody else used weedol and how good is it?
In a severe lightning storm, grab ya ankles, and stick ya butt in the air.

Hi, I have used it previously and it is affective on surface weeds, but not as affective on ones with tap roots such as docks. I am not sure about weedol, but the best weed killers have a high amount of 'Glyphosate' in them, such as roundup.

In the absence of smillies I can't tell if that was a serious or joke suggestion Deucepetrol  ::)

This really isn't a good idea.  Apart from the obvious hazards to life and limb, a) it's possibly illegal and b) I really wouldn't want to eat fruit and veg grown in land which inevitably will have been contaminated with some of the petrol liquid.

Weedol will get the leaves but doesn't get to the roots.
Not unless they have added glyphosphate recently.

Therefore suggest you get a glyphophate basic one and spray the weeds with this, taking care not to overspray elsewhere. After that it is dig the remains out.

You could get a burner that uses a prpoane bottle and burn them with that. Again you will need to dig the remains out as the roots will not be touched.

Finally forget weedkiller and burning, strim the area and dig the remains out.

Notice that ALL options will need you to dig whatever is left out. :D :D :D

If you've got the time, cover the area with an old carpet, and then start things off with a clean bed in Autumn.

I always use Roundup, and this is just the right time of year to use it. It will suck it up stright away. ;)
I may take my time.....but i'll get there in the end.

You need to be carefull with carpet as a lot of councils have banned them as they leach toxins into the soil over a period of time. I agree with Roll Roll, roundup is the most effective treatment ;)

Time for my favourite carpet post

Omegaman's quite right.

As carpet breaks down, it releases toxins from the chemicals used to dye / glue / manufacture / use it.  The fibres themselves do not always break down in the soil, polluting it further.

If it does not break down, weeds will grow through it, making it impossible to lift, or they will grow on top of it so it becomes underneath the top of the soil over time.

And it is an absolute nightmare to dispose of afterwards, whether by you or someone else who inherits the plot.

Please avoid carpet   :D

Go to your local Wilkinsons or B&Q and get a bottle of Glyphosate, a lot cheaper than Roundup, but the same chemical.

In defence of carpet...........

It should be used as a temporary 'black out' rather than a long term mulch.  Leave it down just long enough to block out the light, kill the weeds and create a clean bed. 2 months should be plenty long enough.  Tarpaulines, black plastic sheeting, etc all do the same thing.

If you cut it into sensible size pieces (ie not the whole carpet in one go), then its perfectly easy to handle.  Long strips that can be rolled up like stair carpet are best.  Overlaped to keep out the light.

Avoid the more expensive type, ie pure wool, as that will break up. Synthetic fibres won't rot so quick, if at all.  And of course had you not recycled them, they would have ended up in the tip anyway.

Having said all that, I am also a huge fan of glyphosate for the nasties.  God help us all if the EU ever ban it.
