WINTER LETTUCE QUESTION
« on: November 01, 2011, 22:25 »
Can winter lettuce seeds be sown now or is it too late. I wont to sow some and grow them in the greenhouse.
I would also like to sow some pea shoots - would this be possible now?

I sowed mine a while ago and have just transplanted to troughs. Winter lettuce such as Density, Rouge d'Hiver etc can be grown outside all winter but the butternut types need cloching really (although mine survived last winter in big tubs along the kitchen wall)
I've just looked back in the diary and I sowed more outside in seedtrays in November (must do successional sowings myself!) so I can't see why you can't sow in an unheated greenhouse. No heat....they're meant to be cold.
I can't see why peas wouldn't germinate in a cool greenhouse but use Aquadulce or another cold tolerant type. Seed is cheap so nothing much to lose!!!

I thought Aquadulce were broad beans?

 ;) Mine are  :)

Peas like a little more warmth to actually grow than winter lettuce do, so I have a tray of 'shoots' on the kitchen windowsill to make sure they grow fast enough to eat.
