Reuben anyone?
« on: October 03, 2015, 08:54 »
Hi, am wondering if others have grown this blackberry.  This is its second summer and I'm not sure whether anything worthwhile is ever going to come from it.  It gets plenty of flowers but they come so late that many never get to the fruit stage and those that do are often not fully formed berries.  I've fed it but maybe not enough? From the description I expected great things from this primocane.  Should I just be patient and give it another year or give up and plant something else?  Would be interested to know of others experiences.  Cheers!

Mine are in their second year and have given me a reasonable crop this year, still a few flowers and a fair few fruit slowly ripening so they may not make it. No special treatment just some home made compost early on and watered regularly.

Like you I expected great things, but my Reuben has also never performed.  Leaves always seem to get eaten by something early in the season, and fruits are always few & late. Chester on the other hand has performed very well.

Hmm.  Might give it one more year and try Chester also.  Would be nice to pick my own instead of scouring the hedgerows!

This blackberry has been around for a few years now but I have yet to read anybody saying that they have had good results from it. Can anybody recommend it from their experience?

Based on the responses think I might compost it too.  Maybe it does ok down south where it's got longer to form fruit.  Need something fairly compact to replace it with though as its in a fruit cage with currants and there's about 5 foot either side.  We'll find another place for a different blackberry.  Thanks for replies folks.
