I give mine a good soak after planting, as the seed needs to soak up a lot of water before germinating.

After that, they get a soak whenever the pots weigh light

I do not understand why gardeners want to start Broad Beans off in pots. I put the seeds directly into the ground around March at approx 4" centres and have never had a problem, I get around 95% coming through.

If I sow direct I get erratic germination, the mice also have a go and at the moment most of my plot has been in standing water. If I sow in pots I can sow a little earlier and they are safe from both excessive wet and most predators (bar the jackdaws who figured out how to get through my netting last week  :nowink:)

Whatever works best for the individual...

I do both - cheaper and easier to sow direct, but the mice take at least half the seeds and if we have too much rain, they all rot! (The beans I mean - not the mice (sadly))

I guess it could give you time and focus to clear and prepare the land too.

Straight in the ground works for me, and I soak them for half an hour in paraffin before planting.  This puts the mice off!   ;)

Don't suppose paraffin helps with rain too does it? Although the state of my veg patch over the last few months means the only crop I'm likely to succeed with this year is rice
