ten parts pebbles to one part soil
« on: April 18, 2008, 08:53 »
Just spent a couple more hours digging this morning before work.
My lovely new plot - even the beds that have been cultivated last year - are just riddled with stones.

Anyone suggest some veg suitable for growing on a rockery???  :D

Still - I have two beds prepared and ready to plant now and got some weed killing plastic down to make way for another couple of beds in the future.

Spuds going in tomorrow I think!!
Good beer, good BBQ and good friends.

Don't be disheartened ... mine was much the same  ... just keep adding loads of goodies ... build up the top soil ... use straw to mulch everything ...

... and remember with stone in the gound the soil is WARMER !!!!   :D  :D  8) ... so that gets you off to a flying start !!

... I also have a stone car park ... stone paths ... stone hard standing for shed ... stones stones and more stones  .... ...  zzzzz

1 part clay, 1 part brick, 1 part stone, 1 part house hold waste.

Very little soil.

I've just brought in entirely new soil for the beds, dug down 2 spades, pretty much until I hit the really bad places, filled it with giant bags of compost, am planting in that.

Didnt think about leaving stones in as heaters.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

Dont give up on  it. My house is new build on brown field site and back "garden" had a pretence of about one inch of top soil. I put in deep raised beds - loads of imported topsoil compost farmyard manure etc and it cropped very well in first year. So add as much as you can find/afford/shift.
