Not kate moss just moss
« on: March 27, 2010, 18:42 »
I've just been sorting out my compost heap. This was some lovely black compost at the bottom but I see the moss (from the lawn) my wife mixed in last year did not compost much. I've taken out the most visible pieces but there is still some left in. Will this cause any problems when I put the compost on my allotment?

Well, as the silence is deafening here. I've looked on the Internet and apparently, moss does take a long time to break down in a compost but it won't hurt the allotment. I quote from Gardenbanter:

"Moss spores are ubiquitous, and it grows where the conditions are right.
I suppose that it MIGHT spread from live material, but most species of
moss don't. Even when digging in live, uncomposted moss very shallowly,
I have never seen it 'take"'.

Just sprinkle a bit of real lawn sand on it. The ferrous sulphate will kill the moss. If it has Ammonia Nitrate as well it will provide some nitrogen which won't hurt your compost, it will provide some nitrogen so act as an accelerator.

Don't use a proprietary lawn conditioner which may be ferrous sulphate and a broad leaf herbicide.

If you've picked it out it should be fine. I did the same thing and found it still there after an age.  I now let the chooks at it and they scrat it all up and I dump it behind the trees in my garden or in the council green bin.  There'll be plenty for lining hanging baskets  :)

I'm afraid that I learned from older gardeners in the family many generations ago that moss does not go on compost heaps. It doesn't rot - as people have found out. Better to kill it dead before raking out of the lawn.  :)

Great thing experience - I prefer it to be someone else's experience if it is going to cause me trouble.  ;)
