Reducing the height of conifers
« on: May 23, 2013, 23:06 »
Hiya. Firstly we live near Rotherham, S.Yorkshire.
There is a row of conifers between us & next door, that have been left to grow by previous tenants to about 20' tall. Although they are in next doors garden we had them lowered by about 4' 2 years ago but the lady who moved in next door last year has said that she wants to have them lowered to about 10' because they are twice the height of our bungalows. My question is if she has this done will they survive such a drastic chop or will it kill them in which case would it be better to have them chopped right down to ground level.
Any thoughts will be gratefully received.  ::)

As long as they have plenty of growth below the cut point they will survive, well the ones in my garden did! :)

After a year or two they will have greened over the top, and grown another couple of feet in the process.
So you may think it's better to cut them a bit lower than the height you are aiming for, to allow for this.
