Regrowth of feathers after attack by fox/cat
« on: September 29, 2016, 09:32 »
I started a topic in Chicken Chat about what happened to my hens.
What I now wish to know is how long will it be till my hen regrows her lost feathers on her wing so she can fly what little she could do before the attack?
She cannot jump/fly up to a raised bed just 12in's high.
This morning I had to get her down from the coop despite, her trying but being reluctant to jump down from three feet?
I'll have to help her morning and evening for how long?

I suspect she has a bruised leg or pulled muscle Tom.  Even with a wing clipped a fit hen would flutter down from a coop 3 feet up and would jump into a 12 inch high raised bed.

Check her over again, but be really careful.  She won't necessarily let you know it is hurting.  If the skin isn't broken she will heal on her own, but it might take a few weeks.  If there are any puncture wounds or something feeling really not right, like a big swelling, she will need a visit to the vet for antibiotics.

Hello,
Thank New Shoot for that.
But, I think she has recovered as last evening she got onto the coop herself, and this morning she was down from the coop so I am a lot happier and relieved.
There doesn't appear to be any wounds, just a lot of feathers missing.
She's eating well and roaming the garden as usual.
So I'll still keep a close eye on her for a few days at least.

Those feathers may not regrow until the next time she molts, especially the large primaries.
