Fertilizer
« on: April 03, 2008, 09:09 »
Hello,

I am new to allotments, only a year in from working on one. I have some growmore to fertilize the garden and understand it doesn't work with certain types of vegetables. We are particulalry looking at doing a big onion/ shallot patch and having dug it over are unsure whether to add growmore and/ or chicken manure. I have also been using soil improver on the soil.

Anyone got any advice as to the dos and don'ts with these types of fertilizer?

Thanks

Catherine

Hi Catherine welcome to the forums  :D
Re the growmore thing I cant think of any plant that growmore might not be suitable for, it's a balanced fertilizer for general purpose use. To that extent I use it everywhere, it's probably not the best for tomatoes and other similar crops as it does not tailor to their exact requirements but it will do more good than none
What soil improver have you been using, most of these will add some nutrient to the soil as well.
Hope this helps

I agree with Richy Growmore and Chicken pellets will be fine for onions and shallots.

Growmore will work with any plant but remember it's a chemical fertiliser and will not do anything for the soil structure and beneficial soil bacteria.  You will need to add compost or manure as well to maintain the soil structure.

Chicken manure pelleted I presume will work fine and is IMHO a better bet than Growmore. It will still need compost and/ or manure for the structure. At least the CM will nor degrade the soil structure or bacteria.

Chemicals have their place but IMHO not as the main source of nutrient . For a quick boost use something like Seaweed solution or Miricle Grow of the two I prefer seaweed but the best long term is bulky compost and rotted manure
