Title: too late to move chives?
Post by: al78 on April 25, 2013, 18:49
I have a couple of clumps of chives in my garden which have been there for a few years and I was planning to divide them and re-plant them at the allotment. I have noticed that they are starting to produce flower buds. Is it still possible to move them or am I likely to kill them by doing this at this stage?

I'm amazed yours have got to flowering stage already - mine are only just getting going after their unexpectedly long winter rest. I chop mine down after flowering, feed and let them grow again (although that usually happens in June rather than April!)

They would normally be divided and replanted in early spring, but they are very hard plants to kill, so I suggest you do it anyway - with a bit of food and water I'm sure they'll soon romp away again.  :)

Dig them  up with a good amount of soil attached to the roots and they won't even notice the move  :D
Water them well if it stays dry, of course.

and yes, mine has flower buds on as well  :D

I treat mine very roughly and dig them up, divide, and move them whenever the fancy moves me.
I rarely feed them and they rarely get to flowering stage as I cut them constantly for cooking.

With all my very rough treatment they still carry on growing.

I divide them into small clumps and plant them in between the carrots too .

I would be at risk of experiencing "chive flower envy" if it wasn't for the fact that I've got self-seeded chives coming up in seemingly impossible locations (I've even taken to running past them in case they start growing out of the lace holes of my gardening shoes!)

Ok I'll dig up one clump and try re-planting this weekend. If it goes horribly wrong then I still have another clump in the garden.
