Pests
« on: July 25, 2014, 08:22 »
Morning chaps, three pests to identify please:

1) There's something nibbling my cabbage seedlings, I'm left with the stem only (sorry blurry photograph).

2) Little white flies under brassicca leaves.

3) Holes in peppers and aubergines in greenhouse (thought the toms and cucumbers are left alone).

Any advice for their destruction please.

First and last look like damage from small slugs, to me.

Whitefly don't seem to be much of a pest, only on the outside leaves, and I prefer not to spray. (In any event you can only usually spray a few times in a year, please read the labels carefully, and they will keep coming back.)

Whitefly are partial to kale in particular, and in a very bad infestation, they can put you off eating it, but most often the problem is manageable as MOS says. They can hang around way into the Winter when settled in :)

I have noticed that whitefly tend to attack particular beds and not others, so after a horrible infestation a few years back, these days I split my kale into two and plant in separate beds at opposite ends of the plot. Certainly cuts down the odds and seems to work well. I do something similar with my Autumn PSB and dot them around singly. In that way some of my PSB escape the attention of birds throughout the Winter and remain net free.... a sort of disguise.

Thanks both, I'll worry less about the whitefly and try baiting or whatever for the slugs in the greenhouse ...

Holes on peppers and Aubs could be caterpillars. Check closely for slug/snail trails and strands of slime across the holes - if there isn't any it's prob caterpillars so you'll need to get hunting and squishing!
