Unexpected hot weather
« on: February 11, 2008, 19:39 »
Well very nice weather anyway.  Now is when impatient gardeners start to think about planting a few things that really should not go in the ground or even the greenhouse just yet.

Just because the weather is a bit warmer then it normally is at this time of year does not mean its time to go mad.  We all want to get out there but my advice is give it a litte while yet.
The weather will soon return to normal.

If you plant to early you could lose it, if you do plant late most veg will very soon catch up  .
Some poor village is missing its Idiot
plus officially the longest ever occupier of the naughty step.

I also think those words are wise, I obtained my plot in mid May last year,so from shallots, onions and spuds, and all the other items went out from that date, and the Harvest was very good.

Very tempted today, but as an old friend used to say every year.

" The only thing you get out of planting early is disapointment"
As the great Percy Thrower used to say
" OI THINK THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SOIL"

A wise warning MKH.
I must admit with this warmer weather I was thinking yesterday of planting my Shallot sets next Sunday "To give them a early start".
But you are right it is far better to wait.

I found last year that the carrots I planted early were less successful and the leeks as well, the leeks were thinner.

This is my first year growing from seed, so am I right in thinking it is okay to start off my seedlings? Chillis, toms and cucumbers?

Gulps nervously!

Snappy

 we just won't tell him

Mind you I've got onion seeds in, also a few cauli's  :D

666 do you have some where to keep 'em frost free and in plenty of light ? till end of May or do you have a greenhouse for them to go in ? chillis and toms can go in from about now IMO only if you can give them what they need, Tom's will manage to fruit  from a later sowing and cuke's I don't start till March.
