Cabbages to sow now?
« on: June 08, 2018, 18:21 »
Hi all, could anyone recommend a good (pref) red cabbage to sow now for overwintering?,I know its late but got space available soon (polytunnel and outside) and really fancy me some red cabbage.
. . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

I'm overwintering some January King outside this year and under double cover in the tunnel I'll have a couple of Red Rodeo.

I have just sown Lodero, which is a mid sized, club root resistant sort, and they germinated in four days, which is promising.
They overwintered well last year despite the rain and cold

Looking at the Mr Fothergill's catalogue, Tinty can also be sown in June - it's a pointed head red cabbage.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Do not grow cabbages now, as have plenty locally who do and I swap other vegetables for them.
But a successful summer sown red cabbage that I grew for a number of years matured quickly was Ruby perfection.
I got the seeds in France, but it was the same supplier as Marshalls.
I sowed them in May and June outdoors and replanted them spaced a foot apart when they had about three sets of leaves. They grew quick and were mature in September and October.
Very tasty too.
