I grew some beetroot this year for the first time. Kestrel F1. I only really did some to utilise a bed which had had broad beans in. I gave the bed a good old dig incuding the bean roots and added some growmore. I set the beetroot off in modules whilr the growmore had time to do it's business. Planted out and hey presto, really nice healthy top growth with good signs of beetroot forming. Occasionally gave a bit of a feed with seaweed stuff, as r3commendeed onnhere. Lovely healthy plants. BUT..........pulled some up today, sizes varied greatly. Also, the tops of the beets themselves were a bit faded and on the scabby side. What did I do wrong?

When you say the tops of the beets do you mean the leaves of the top part of the round bit?

The tops of some of mine had been chewed away. I put it down to the weasel  that our cat killed about 2 weeks ago

Nothing wrong with what you did. The shoulders of beetroot will become faded and corky looking after exposure to sun. When you hoe between the rows of beetroot, gently earth up the roots, this will keep the light off them and give you clean roots.
