Quick question regarding parsnips: do they get attacked by the carrot root fly? Always use enviromesh for my carrots but wasn't sure about the parsnips ::)

Yes, but due to their size they do not usually suffer as badly as carrots. In a bad year they get parsnip canker due to the fly, which can do a fair amount of damage.
We don't use any protection and usually get a good crop.

I found they always attacked uncovered carrots and occasionally, parsnips :(

They do get attacked by carrot fly but nothing like as badly. They certainly don't seem to like the taste of parsnips as much!
Before we used veggiemesh, we struggled to get a decent crop of carrots, but parsnips were always ok. We might get the odd one that was worse than others but generally speaking they were/are fine.

Thank you for the advice :) I'll give the parsnips a go without any netting. Carrots are a massive no-no on our site uncovered, just riddled with maggots :ohmy:

I cover a whole bed with mesh and do.my roots in it together.

This year I'm putting my leeks in with my carrots as last year's crop of leeks were destroyed by leek moth.

I use it over a blue hoop tunnel with a cane along the top middle held on with cable ties. The edges are weighted down with lengths of wood (or bricks sometime) to leave no gaps. Lifting up the side for weeding etc is easy: water goes through of course. Seems to work OK

Yes I've done that before but not with the connecting cane, I've been wondering whether to sew a channel across the short length to thread the hoop through for stability & to stop it sagging or to thread a cane through & stick it in upright in the ground with a further piece of mesh clipped over the top so that I could climb in to weed etc. Last couple of years I've sown the parsnips & carrots lengthways down my narrow beds to make better use of the ground & netting, but this year I've gone back to short rows across the width, with the hoops I find the netting etc gets in the way of growth where it touches the ground so the rows end up shorter still.
