Garlic-Thermidor
« on: April 16, 2018, 08:16 »
Having just read another post on garlic made me decide to ask my learned fellow gardeners
When would I likely to have planted Thermidor garlic? Funny question huh. It appeared at the end of last year, but too early for me to have planted it as autumn planted garlic, but it wasn’t there in the summer, well at least not any growth, I had no idea what it was so broke a leaf off & it’s definitely garlic, so I left it alone(by the way it was in my onion bed).
I went yesterday & by the looks of the top growth it’s doing really well, in fact better than I’ve ever managed! There are more than 1 set of healthy leaves to each plant! Never had that before. All in neat rows & spaced out well, so I must have planted it but when? And when shall I harvest it bearing in mind my onions mainly rotted away. Shall I sacrifice a plant to see what’s underneath?
I look forward to your replies😊
P.s have googled Thermidor garlic & cant find it for sale anywhere

Could be Thermidrome, though  :D This is autumn sown.

Germidour has purple skins, Thermidrome has white.
If there are more than one set of leaves, it suggests that the planted garlic did manage to split into cloves last year, and each clove has started into growth this year. Left undivided I think you'll get garlic flavoured 'spring onions' and lots of scapes, as they'll have no space to swell up.

Back in 2014, I planted Thermidrome at the end of September, Snows, lifting them in June 2015.

In 2015, I planted Thermidrome in the middle of October. We lifted them during the third week in June 2016.

The first lot were much bigger and better than the following year, the bulbs are thick/soft necked, and made for great crushing! Good flavour and kept well too!
