As sure as eggs is eggs - DD's Pea pics...
« on: May 10, 2017, 07:15 »
This is the time of year, when we all need to see Digger Dave's peas in action!

It's a requirement of this site for everyone to view the various photographs - some on their original glass plates - some still with the original Kodak/Ilford receipts - that are displayed as a masterclass in pea-growing!

As usual, the search for these is complicated, as 'Pea God' only turns into a warning that religious subjects are not allowed, so perhaps DD is able to rifle through his back copies, and re-post some of the best ever pictures of how peas should be grown! They always give me hope!

Over to you Maestro!

OK, here they are. The ones on the plot - taken about 4-5 days ago. They were staked up and covered in netting straight after this piccie was taken.

Pictured yesterday, Kent Blue in flower in the greenhouse.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Growster - DD's pea advice thread is easily found in the Growing FAQs and other advice part of the forum  :D

Yep, make a trench with a spade and throw them in by the handful. No soaking, no transplanting, no guttering and above all no faffing!

It sounds so easy - that's cos it is
I've done a few short rows just like that this year as usual. I'll make another sowing of the tall variety Alderman in the next few days.

Remember to sow thickly, like DD. does, to allow for the seeds that won't germinate.

DD:  I've also sown some Salmon flowered Crown pea, Clarke's Beltony Blue and Carruther's Purple Podded for seed saving this year, as the seed I had was getting a bit old now.
The Winterkefe peas in the greenhouse are just flowering, so not long to wait - must remember not to eat them all

Yeh! Yeh! Dave, just like that. They look a treat.

One thing I see frequently is transplanted rows with plants about 6inches apart. The secret is plenty of plants. An inch apart is about right. The average packet of seed (300) will sow 25 foot of row.

On the adjacent plot, where the rows of peas leads the eye, they have a raised bed where they're planted 4 peas about 6" apart in squares,  and about 12" between these squares. Don't know what they're expecting to get!

OK.  I have sown my first rows (short ones) about 3 inches apart and staggered but nothing has come up yet and obviously I didn't sow enough anyway.  I'm going back today then, to sow a thick row like DDs!  Do the same rules apply for sugarsnaps and mangetout?

Peas are a very tricky crop down here. The have to be grown in the very early part of the spring when they could be damaged by frost or water logging then come May/early June they could be frazzled by the sun.. I don't grow them too much trouble but your ones look great... emm you really like peas don't you :)

Oh yes. I've also got some in the back garden surrounding one of the greenhouses and also inside the greenhouse (as per the picture) behind the tomato plants, up against the glass.

Nice one Dave!

I always need a fix of pics of your peas each year, and thank you Mum - for pointing out the link too!

It's just that we have so many new friends here, that someone might not know that we are in the midst of 'He Who Will Plant Peas', and that we should all follow his advice!

Just today, after seeing these posts, I popped down to 'The Patch', and sowed two short rows exactly as DD describes, as the 'faffing' in modules has got nearly nowhere here and the plants aren't particularly good either!

They're safely in, and will get netted etc. later on!

I aim to sow late March/Early April. That way you avoid the worst of the dreaded pea moth. If you've got short rows, you might consider covering with fine mesh at flowering time.
