Rake and hoe - in future years do it before it sets seed and you'll get on top of it in 7-8 years

One of the better weeds to have ,dig in as green manure or leave to hold moisture in hot weather.

Provided there are no other 'nasty' weeds in the area, I dig chickweed in as a sort of green manure too.

There are two sorts of chickweed, one of which can root off a cut stem, not just propagate from flowers.. These low ground cover weeds are potentially good green manure and I certainly try my best to incorporate as much as I can. But they are always a long term management issue.
My ever present weed of that type is speedwell, and apparently it can replicate from bits of root just like bindweed. I didn't know this until a couple of years ago, and had always wondered why it kept returning. I know now. I certainly wouldn't rotovate speedwell or any similar low creeping weed like chickweed. These weeds are tempting as a green manure but safer to compost properly first, or at least turn by hand.
