I just noticed an allotment neighbor has his onion sets out already. Anyone else going for it this early?

Mine are sitting on a bed of compost in a cold frame. They might as well be doing that then staying in the bag. They will take root and I will plant out next month.

Depends where you live. Here in Reading I put mine out mid March usually, but folk who garden in "softer" areas might have them in already. Friend sin Leeds put theirs in early April.

If the ground was frozen though, dates get extended of course

Mine are growing slowly in mpc filled modules in the cold greenhouse. When they are about an inch high I will move them to bench outside but under cover to harden off for a while and when we get a nice day towards the end of march i will plant em out.
Works well for me.

I find I have too many for that, so wait and plant them out directly, but I can see the usefulness of doing this for a smaller number

How many are you planting?
I have Kilo of sets (about 160)
They don't need much space at first and you can see which are not going to grow when you come to plant them out..

My sets are still in the bag, i won't be planting out until middle to end of this month.
Still got some cold weather to deal with.

I have about 250. There is not space for that number of growing sets so settle for a slightly later start. Last year I did plant half a dozen of each of three varieties in pots to grow on early, to see if those made larger onions. They quickly grew out of the three inch pots.
Although some did make larger onions, just as many did not, so this year they are just going to be planted as usual, mid March. Their beds are ready and waiting!
