Lethargic hen
« on: August 13, 2015, 20:08 »
Hi chicken lovers,
One of my three hens this afternoon has gone all lethargic.
Reluctant to move or eat, even when I put down some meal worms in front of her.
I put her in the cage this evening as usual and she is still reluctant to eat.
They sleep on the top of the coop which is in the poultry cage but, free roaming during the day.
I believe it is similar to another of my hens about two months ago and the symptoms cleared in a day or two.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what it possibly could be and what to do about it.

My cure is a bath in Epsom salts, a rinse and blow dry and then drip feed her a weak solution of Epsom salts. If still no good trip to the vets, if you wish.

If you can't see or feel anything out of the ordinary like parasites, impacted crop or discharge from the vent, she could be egg bound.  Its gets very uncomfortable for them and they lose all interest in food.  It came up recently as a topic and warm water baths and massage can help.

Hello chicken lovers,
Thank you for the replies.
My girl seems to be ok today, although she has not laid an egg that I know of.
But, next time it occurs I'll try the warm bath.
Will they like it or will I end up getting soaked?
Just like to know is I need to wear some weather-proofs!!!
Have a nice summer.

They flap a bit at first, but if you gently persuade them to sit down, they end up loving it.  Mine loves being blow dried afterwards!

mine was the hen that was eggbound in an earlier post. Tried the warm bath and she put up a bit of a flap, but by the third bath could be left sitting in it for 20 minutes -I've even had a hen try and get in there with her! Any way, it did the trick - very large egg the following day.

Thanks folks for the egg-cellent advice!

To ghost61 and helenaj,
Many thanks for the advice.
My hen has since laid three soft shell eggs, which I found by accident and she now seems to be normal!!
But at least now I know what the problem was and what to do next time.
