Drying and storing marrowfat peas
« on: August 26, 2010, 19:48 »
Hi,

My 'Maro' marrowfat peas appear ready for harvest.  I've read that they should be allowed to dry on the plant before harvesting, but I live in South Cheshire and it's so wet at the moment, I can't imagine they will dry naturally outside.

Does anyone have any experience drying them off of the plant (e.g. in the PolyTunnel, left inside the pod or extracted first?) and then how to store them best once dry?

Jonathan

I would take them off the plant, pop the pods in shallow trays and pop the trays in the airing cupboard. In a few days, the pods will be dry and you can open them and take the peas out. Leave them in the airing cupboard to continue drying until, when you shake the tray, the rattle changes from dull thud to high pitched rattle. then pour into a paper bag, and put them somewhere cool and dry until the spring.
