This is one crop i've always bean lazy over. Every year when i wat to plant i rush off to wilko's or allotment shop and they have only had red barron, these seem to go to seed very easy round here(typically half the bulbs)
Anyone recommend another variety so i can order some now?

Glad it is not just me. For the last two years I have tried and failed to grow Red Baron only to have them go to seed. This year it must have been 80% or more. I did grow some red winter onions and only 3 out of about a 100 went to seed but I cannot remember what they were called.

I grew Hyred supplied by Marshalls this year and they were very good. I did get plague with onion mildew from a crop of over wintered onions but Hyred still cropped well.

Hyred are not for overwintering.

From what I observe most overwinterer red onions bolted badly this year. Presumably the cold Winter was to blame.

Suttons do heat treated Hyred so any embryo flower has been killed. These do not get delivered until April.

Never have overwintered red onions, just want to get some ordered soon for spring so i dont end up with no choice again.
Salmo, are you saying if the sets are heat treated they wont/are unlikely to bolt?

Yes, they are heat treated to kill the embryo flower and should not bolt. I have grown Hytech which are the white equivalent. Because they are delivered late you will probably start off after everyone else but they soon catch up.

For my red onions this year I sowed North Holland Blood Red spring onions in early March and left some to bulb up. Not hugh but good keepers.

They were on sale at the same time as the Japanese winter onion sets so I bought and planted them at the same time.

I think the variety is called Comred...

I think the winter onion type I used that did well, might have been called Electric.

I've planted Electric sets this year after several years of sticking with Red Baron which have given hit & miss results, (mostly miss last year).  It's good to try something new, hoping for a good crop!

Started reading this thread knowing that we planted overwintering red onions last year and they were fine....first time with onions so maybe beginners luck,couldnt remember the variety until further down the thread....Electric they were!

i planted electric red's last winter and i was quite dissapointed with the result so i have switched back to senshue this winter.
