Lemon and Orange
« on: April 15, 2011, 17:00 »
I`ve just taken receipt of 1 lemon and 1 orange trees.

The Advert says....."At last !..The Perfect Orange and Lemon trees that will thrive and grow like crazy in your garden right here in the UK".

Hmmm. I really wanted to plant them outside in my garden soil all year round (obviously with protection in winter). The advert  says hardy to -5.

The "Cultural" instructions that came with them say plant in a large pot and bring indoors in winter and cover with one of the fleece covers that came with it. ...not really the "Hardy" plant I thought.

I have always wanted a lemon tree, and the offer on the 2 trees was to good to miss.

Has anyone got any advice on growing these to trees please.?
Do they need Acid compost ??

The varieties are Navelina (orange) Eureka (lemon)

They do prefer an acid compost - also, make sure you let the compost dry out a lot before you water - they like drought followed by water. They're also happier with regular feeding - there's a special citrus feed (winter and summer) you can get. Mine were indoors over the winter - and ended up with a spider mite infestation! Ho hum - you can never win at this game, can you!

The good lady has tried these two varieties, presumably from the same supplier. Last winter killed them. They were in a sheltered porch, so presumably got down well below their threshold. She managed to keep one in the garage, but it's very sickly looking.
Personally, I think their advertising is verging on the optimistic side.
Two plots with The Leicester Permanent Society - still learning.

Hardy to -5C isn't too bad.

This last winter got down to -15 or below.  I'm hardly surprised they didn't survive well; nothing wrong with the advertising.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
