Crimson Crush issue?
« on: April 28, 2016, 13:39 »
Has anyone else had germination problems with Suttons Crimson Crush tomatoes?  Out of my six, only two have come up. All the other toms in the adjoining modules have had 100% germination so it is not the conditions so far as I can see.

Before I contact them ( with photo if they need one) I just wondered what other people's experience has been.

Yes - (but I was too ashamed to say). At last check I had 50% (3/6) germination from new Sutton seed but around 80% from my saved seeds.

I also noticed my saved seeds were much bigger than the new.

I rang Suttons and they are very happy to replace the packet for me. It is a little late for this year but I can use them next season.

Perhaps you should also ring, Lardman? They looked up my order details using my post code

It's a bit late to resow them now and to be honest Id rather get fresh seeds next year for next year, assuming I haven't concreted over the veg patch in disgust  ::)

I bought two packet of Crimson Crush seed, one for a friend and one for myself.  Every seed that I sowed germinated, but my friend didn't have a single one.  I sowed mine later, and it's possible that the temperatures were too low for my friend's seeds, but I couldn't say with any certainty.

Have to confess that we decided just to sow the seed from last year's plants...

They've all come up, and some are showing slightly different leaf forms, but the other thirteen are doing pretty well.

I hope this thread runs and runs, as we're all in awe at something which may just beat something as enigmatic as the blight, but hey-ho, we're gardeners, so anything goes - but maybe at a price..:01

Had an email from Sutton apologising for he inconvenience and confirming more seed will arrive. I shall put them in the tin for next year as tomato seed is generally long lived.

It has been a funny year for things. Usually I have no problems with this year had a few rotten onion sets in the a from Unwins... whole new bag of 100 sent in replacement (lucky we have #145 now!) and a couple of soft corms in my batch of begonias (Van Meuwen this time) and I received - eventually, as some of you may know already -  afurther ten, plus a £10 voucher for all the mistakes made at their end. Wow!!

At least the nurseries are trying to rectify their errors, which is a good thing imho!

Thought I should give an update: Suttons sent me two packets of Crimson Crush seeds in replacement, with a date on the packet saying packed 2016, good until 2019.

Happy with that outcome. I shall add these to my early sowing list for  next season
