onion sets this early?
« on: January 17, 2007, 15:36 »
hello all,

i picked up a bag of stuttengarter onions in wilkos for a quid. now, according to my book i should put these in in late feb/march. But i want to get cracking!

If i put them under a polytunnel (after its been on the ground a week say to get the soil warm) can i put them in around now? Ive got a space ready for them and i think im going to put a bigger tunnel over my beans, so the tunnel will be free in a few days as well.

where's King Cauli when u need him    I normally put me sets in around the Christmas week, my local garden centre stocks them in November. I have found that planting them in winter suits them better than in spring. This year I am not planting any, decided as I had 80% wiped out last year by the fly I was going to grow leeks all year round instead as these tend not to be bothered as much, I will use the plots around me to attract the fly to them

pretty likely, i recon, i expect around early march it'l give us a belting!

that said, the missus reported a flurry of snow just as she was leaving work, and shes on fairly low ground near leeds.

Im back at work tomorrow, and i work right on the top of the moors (just tried to put a piccy of it on but cant do it cos its not webhosted) if theres been any snow, it'l be up there and it'l be a pig getting to work

the 19th or the 20th would be good day to plant your onions, watch for hard frosts, they will come, ive known snow on april the 25th 88 or 89,dont remember which.why dont you try seeds rather than sets?

thats the aerial mast! those white tubes on top are the upper and lower stack aerials. The buildings on the left are the transmitter halls, and the building im in (actually more V shaped) on the right is the offices/control rooms/service center

unless I'm very much mistaken that be emley moor mast - i have a pic in the photo album of me and said mast taken on 11.02.1990, when I was taking OH on a tour of the sights in and around huddersfield.

from what I can remember it was very snowy very cold very windy and a bit of a bleak place all in all.  great location to work from tho.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.
