They say you can use last years potatoes as seed for this year, but the only thing they reckon is that they may have picked up something nasty, and proper seed potatoes are supposed to be blight free.

Saying that, I'm sure some people on here have said they do it regularly and some of us have even grown from supermarket potatoes before, so have a go!!!!

If they show no signs of disease, have a go. - Use nicely sized ones, not the little weedy things which you wouldn't eat!
Keep the plot cultivated, that's the best way to ensure its future.

I used to buy my seed potatoes from a scottish supplier but when I ordered the same type for the third year running they contacted me to say that I should only buy them about every third /fourth year and to save my own  seed from year to year.
(No longer in business unfortunatley)

P.S
I know that during the War (Second!!!!!) when potato seed was difficult to come by, they grew their potato crop from peelings.

My grandma did that.

They need to be thickly peeled with eyes ( there's a pun in there somewhere)

As I'm growing veg in containers, and I'm only going to grow 2 potato plants, I'm using a couple of spuds from the supermarket - as it would be silly to spend nearly £6 on seed potatoes when I need only 2!

Fingers crossed that they are ok - if not, they have only cost me time.

I'm sure my uncle from the states say that they just buy them as a little plug of spud with the eye in the middle ?

you might be wasting your time gaz on supermarket spuds it realy is hit and miss, you can get 3kg bags for around £3 homebase/wilkos/B&Q
plant a few in pots and when you harvest around june then plant some more.
feed the soil not the plants
organicish
you learn gardening by making mistakes
