How to turn a pallet into a planter....
« on: February 06, 2013, 10:48 »
Hi all,

I read about this in a magazine and thought I would have a go. I know it would be good for a lot of annuals but do you think it would be suitable as a planter for strawberries?

Thanks,

Caroline

My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)

There is a thread on here about using a pallet laying down lined with plastic or weed suppresant and used for cabbages etc, but I like the idea of it standing up.  Ideal for strawberries I would think.

I've just bought some of those hanging bags from Ebay to expand my strawberries, but this is my strawberry tower, cost £7 using the triple pots from poundland.

It's 10 high now and lives just inside my greenhouse

I think they are £1 each now Caroline, but when I got them last year, they were doing 3 for £2 !!  :)

You have to be careful if the wind catches it though, which is why I put it inside the greenhouse.  I had lots of strawbs and no bird damage.

Hi all,

Thanks,

There is an article in the new GYO (March) where they do just that.

I am also planning to incorporate some vertical strawberry planters into my "fencing" on my new plot.
Read about my allotment exploits at Ecodolly at plots 37 & 39.  Questions, queries and comments are appreciated at Comment on Ecodolly's exploits on plots 37 & 39

How did you make this? I can see a metal pole going up through the middle but how did you attach the pots at the top and bottom and where would you get a pole like that?

I think you'd have to get the plastic just right to stop the soil drying out really quickly.

My OH has these threaded steel rods.  He cut a hole through the middle of each pot, threaded them on the rod, then screwed a nut top and bottom.

Yes Ema, in the summer they can dry out quite quickly, but I mixed the water gell stuff in with the compost, and this year I am going to try to fix up a drip feed thingy over them.  When I water the top the water drips down the centre core too a bit!

I have some cheap perforated hose I bought a few years back.  I was going to wind it around and perhaps peg it into each level, then hang a bucket or something over the top and fit a little hozelock tap or something into the bucket to take the end of the hose.
