a shrub id if possible please !
« on: June 05, 2014, 09:07 »
I have taken a couple of shots of firstly the bush/shrub at real size in situ and then a close up macro shot to show the shape of the leaves and also the luscious blue berries that both our resident breeding pair of mistlethrushes and blackbirds just don't seem to be able to get enough off. also I would like to know the best way of taking a cutting from it, any help and advice would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance jay & jane  :D

Looks like a mahonia to me, does it have yellow flowers in the winter?

Definately a mahonia - my mum's got one in her garden and it's a prickly big brute.

That's Mahonia alright :)  It's a real value for money evergreen that has sweetly scented yellow flowers in late winter/early spring and then those blue berries.

I've never done cuttings from it but according to my propagating plants book its one to do late summer or autumn to root over winter  :)

I'm not sure, but I think they (or certain varieties) have suckers you can take off, or you can peg down a couple of low branches and they should root then be detached from the main plant.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
