Sweet peas stems and no flowers?!
« on: June 10, 2013, 20:55 »
Hi, I have planted sweet peas some autumn sown and some in spring. The early ones are starting to flower now but I have noticed there are a lot of fully grown stems with no flower buds.

Is this just due to it still being early in the year or could it be something else?

It's possible your plants are a bit late in flowering, but you can also ensure they'll flower by making sure they each got some rotted manure, something to climb up, and the end tips pinch to encourage lots of side bushing and flowers. Sweet peas seem to need to be growing vertically so they can throw out horizontal flowering shoots.

They do have a frame that they have been trained up and are about 3ft tall. The soil was well prepared in autumn, I have been removing tendrils as I read somewhere to do this! I a bit miffed!

I have had 4 flowers so far and they smell fantastic!

Trillium, I think the OP means that there are some stems with flowers but also some stems with no bloom developing on the end.
I noticed one of mine doing that yesterday.

It is still early for spring sown sweetpeas to flower. Mine are about a foot high and not yet in bud.

Feed them as Trillium suggested, then just let them grow.

They should be just fine  :D

Sheeesh. They ARE in flower and it is not too early. I have had them in flower by May the first!
Some stems are not developing flower buds, or unusually they are being eaten or taken. Thats the issue, not feeding, I never feed sweetpeas and have a bumper crop every year, what you do to, and put in the soil beforehand, is the food they need..

Must admit that I don't give my sweetpeas extra feed after I've prepared the soil. Nor have I ever picked off the tendrils - It's what they need to keep themselves upright. I get flowers from June right into September.

I picked off the tendrils one year, waste of time. Theory invented by someone with too much time on their hands !

I had this problem last year as well as flowers that developed on stems that were only an inch long.  I don't know what caused it but I cut them off as though they were proper flowers and the problem sorted itself within a week or two.

Thanks for replies, after removing barren stems there doesn't seem too many now although there are still one or two.

This has never happened to me before so I was a bit unsure, generally looking good now! The spring sown ones are obviously a bit behind but hopefully they will keep flowering later on!
