just about to fill my carrot bed, im going to use top soil but should i mex grit or anything else in with it?

I personally wouldn't mix grit as any stone may cause odd shaped roots. Coarse sand would be better. This would help to grow straight roots. Mind you if you don't mind what they look like, its purely academic if you add grit or sand.

i was thinking grit may of held the water/kept the soil damp better in the summer thats why i said that.

i have some sharp sand here so could use that

anyone else have a opinion?

sharp grit sand is good. Also good for carrots is leafmould. If you don't have any then start yourself a bin today     I've had better carrot results by sowing the carrots in soil but with potting compost in the drill.  I did this after my first lot failed and one of the old lotty guys told me to try it and it worked.  I covered the newly sown carrots with potting compost too

You don't have to of course but it's just a tip
