Help identifying a tree, please
« on: April 24, 2017, 18:24 »
I think it's a maple.  A bit more information might help.  It is currently in a pot in a garden centre, unlabelled, so the height/spread my be affected by the restrictions placed on it, but in case it helps:  it is about 6' tall, and the habit is broadly columnar.  The leaves (pictured) are about 3" across, bright green and the stalks are also green.  I did think some kind of Acer palmatum, but they all seem to have red stalks.  Any advice would be appreciated, thanks

It does look like an Acer , but there are loads available so an id isn't easy.

Japanese maples are usually kept together in a group in a garden centre.  If it is on the tree line with all the other ornamental trees, it could be another kind of maple.

At a guess, if it is a Japanese maple at currently 6' tall, its going to be one of the larger ones, but they pretty easy to prune and keep under control.  If it was a slow growing dwarf type it would be a horrendous price to buy.  You can get them, but they have to be bought in from a specialist supplier.  Not many garden centres don't go to those lengths unless they have an established customer base for specimen and expensive plants.

Thanks so much for this.  The tree is not with others, in fact it is in a corner on it's own - obviously has been there for a long time - there is no price and no label and my impression is that the garden centre people had forgotten about it, but now it is springing into leaf, which is what made me look at it with interest and wonder what it is.  You have confirmed my suspicions about it being, probably, a Japanese maple, and I don't imagine it would be too exotic a specimen, or it wouldn't be languishing in a corner of a garden centre.  I'll carry on trying to identify it.
