Atco rotovator / cultivator repair advice
« on: February 01, 2016, 20:24 »
Hi, I'm looking for some advice about my old atco cultivator deluxe...when filling up the chaincase with oil this imeadiately leaks out of the bearings on the shaft for the tines. I've removed the blades and the washer to reveal the bearing (see photo). The bearings seem to be of the sealed variety and in good condition with no play or obvious wear apart from the oil seeping through from the case. I've downloaded the manual for the qualcast cultimatic as this seems to be more or less identical to mine, but the only parts listed are a felt washer (which is missing on mine) and washer for oil seal.  My questions are-
1. Is the bearing and oil seal an all in one job
2. As the chaincase is sealed is the bearing replaceable
3. How to fix if fixable

As it is currently working I'm abit reluctant to take it all to bits without having a method of putting back together.  Failing all else would it be OK to put a thicker lubricant in to the chaincase as I assume all its lubricating is the chain and cogs.
Well, thanks for taking the time to read this and any help would be much appriciated.
Matt

looking at you pictures it seems you are missing an oil seal from the bearing face. If you can get a replacement it should just slide over the shaft and can be gently tapped into place using a soft hammer.
May the fork be with you

measure the diameter of the shaft, and the internal diameter of the hole and you should be able to get an oil seal of the correct size. they come in the same size as the bearings.
we do the impossible daily, miracles take a little longer.

Thank you for the help, I will take it to my local bearings place to size up a new oil seal, I shall investigate the other side as well and see if that one is missing also.
Again your help is much appreciated.

Hi Taffy
I'm also missing a pulley or two, the Rotavator should have a reverse function which at some point in it's life has been removed, so a photo of mine probably wouldn't help much, but I can post one if you still think it may be of some help. Matt
