Onion "Sturon" sets
« on: September 04, 2017, 17:00 »
I got some Sturon onion sets in the spring, but won't be able to use them until next year?  They cost next to nothing, but will they keep or should I ditch and buy new again next year?

Compost ...  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I'd almost guarantee that they feel soft and have started to decompose

You could look at getting some "Japanese" onions, "Senshyu" for example. These can be planted next month to over-winter and will mature around June. They are not good storers, but are a good filler until the spring planted ones come in.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

i bought some onion sets last Friday from our local nursery  50 sets you can choice your own sets and not  pre packed just how I like it

I've already set some onion seeds in pots several weeks ago and there up and going strong I set 3 varieties  with the sets i potted on today  to overwinter in the poly tunnel potted the sets where potted on in a  a mixture of john innes and multi-purpose compost with a little slow release fertilizer

it will be interesting to see how the two overwinter hopefully we will be planting both out in spring  ;)

My sets will get stuck in the ground early next month, along with the garlic. Then that's it until spring. No faffing.
